1974 Ford Bronco Project

July 5th, 2006

I finally got around to starting the Fabrication category here on Hooked On Fonix. It will be comprised of the projects I am working on at work, mainly after they are complete as to not drag them out over several posts. Here is the first of this new category!

We received a call from a gentleman with a 1974 Ford Bronco that he wanted us to do some work on. He wanted a roll cage to protect his family when cruising around town and the occasional mild offroading. We picked the vehicle up and brought it to the shop.

There was a lot of rust in the rear floorboard and the rear of the frame on the driver side was completely rotted out. We started by cutting out the rear floor and chopping off the rusted frame. We also needed to fix the rocker panels under the doors.

We then cut the rockers out.

We then made a new section of frame and welded it on. We secured the cuts and bends with plate steel welded across the cuts. We then attached shock mounts and spring mounts.

We then made new rockers out of 2×4 tube steel.

A few shots of the frame tie-ins on the rockers that the frame is attached to for added rigidity and safety.

We replaced the floor and made a new roll cage for the Bronco. A few shots of the finished product.

So that’s the Bronco project. I will soon post a write-up about the Jeep YJ Wrangler we recently finished. I hope you enjoyed the read!

I think you should make these into more or less how-tos versus “what we did.” more traffic potential at least, my opinion

I considered that. I could get into tube O.D., tensile strength, and all sorts of other crap.. but I think I want to make this more of a way for my friends to see what I do at work and not make it all technical so it’s boring to read. I will definitely consider it.

I don’t get it. This Bronco got replaced by some sort of vechile. I came here to see horses damn it.

    lol Nick….Riiiiiiight.

If I have any other readers…. would you rather see a simple ‘what we did’ as Justin calls it, or would you want to see a more technical aspect of the projects? I could easily do that with the buggy we are building now. I may go ahead and do it to see what kind of response I get.

I think it would be cooler to see what you did instead of just saying you did it. I can see in the pictures you did it, but if you tell me how I may have a better understanding of what exactly went down instead of “we fixed the car, take a look.”
